That, however, is no more unusual than the way the Chuck Wagon Gang began. D.P. (Dad) Carter started the Chuck Wagon Gang in 1935 for two reasons: one, to get out of the cotton fields of West Texas as itinerant cotton pickers; and two, to make enough money to hire a doctor to treat one of his children, ill with pneumonia.
