John Kay relates, with Mr. Einarson’s assistance, the struggles that he and his Steppenwolf bandmates endured in order to succeed in the often times rugged world of the music business. Though published in 1994, this book is one of those timeless ones that relates universal lessons about how to not only survive life, but to learn to live it well and ultimately to love it. As such, this book contains relevance for yesterday, today and tomorrow. This is especially true since 2007 will mark the fortieth year of touring for John Kay and Steppenwolf. It is, quite simply, about learning how to become and stay a winner throughout life. While some of the author’s anecdotes may be a bit lengthy for some readers, this reviewer feels that they are worth reading in order to not only capture the “feel” of those early times surrounding the birth of Steppenwolf, but also to gain a keener appreciation of Mr. Kay’s contribution to the world of hard rock and blues. I highly recommend this book. It contains as much meaning about life, if not more, than books I have read authored by star athletes or other celebrities in the entertainment business.
